Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education
At the British International School Dakar (BISD), we recognise the importance of Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education as a cornerstone of holistic student development. PSHE equips students with the essential knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate an increasingly complex and dynamic world while fostering their personal, social, and emotional growth.
Our PSHE curriculum is informed by the rigorous standards set by the PSHE Association in the United Kingdom. However, we adapt this framework to reflect the cultural, social, and legal contexts of Senegal, ensuring its relevance and applicability to our students.
Through PSHE, we address three key strands of education:
1. Health and Wellbeing: Students learn how to lead healthy, balanced lives, understanding the importance of physical and mental health, managing stress, and making informed lifestyle choices. Topics include nutrition, personal hygiene, mental resilience, and strategies for maintaining emotional wellbeing.
2. Relationships: We provide age-appropriate education on building and maintaining positive relationships, encompassing respect, empathy, and effective communication. Students explore themes of equality, diversity, and anti-bullying, ensuring they develop a strong moral compass and respect for others.
3. Living in the Wider World: This strand focuses on preparing students for their roles as active, informed, and responsible global citizens. Lessons include financial literacy, understanding the principles of democracy, rights and responsibilities, environmental sustainability, and the significance of cultural diversity.
PSHE education at BISD is designed to be inclusive, interactive, and thought-provoking. Our staff are trained to create safe and supportive environments where students feel confident to engage in open discussions, ask questions, and reflect on their experiences.
By embedding PSHE into the core of our curriculum, we aim to empower students to make informed decisions, build positive relationships, and develop the confidence and resilience needed to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
At BISD, we believe that PSHE not only enhances academic performance but also nurtures the character and values essential for future success.
